Camo128 Post-Development Notes

Hello. My name is ReimJ. I also go by "WildThorn" and "Kevin". When I was writing my original draft, I realized I was writing down my whole development process instead of a simple post-development log. I'll show you my development process if I ever have the will to finish that monster of an essay/article/blog-post.

Thoughts Before Development

I signed up for the Weekly Game Jam on Saturday (2019-12-21). I've heard about this Game Jam sometime last year but only got the will to join it now. I gained that will by finding a game engine that matches my skill-set (RPG Maker MV), completing a game on my own (Harold's Cave Adventure) and going to a local games convention (Sac Gamer's Expo) to meet some fellow developers in the region. This gave me the push to make this game.

Thoughts After Development

A few things I learned or noticed after making this game:

  • This was a lot easier than my first project (Harold's Cave Adventure). Can be attributed to experience.
  • Going asset "shopping" (viewing the default assets) is an easy way to generate ideas
  • Hitting the "generate random" button in the character creator is an easy way to generate ideas (that's where smug blue-hair dude came from)
  • Discovered something I like to call "game designer's block", where I feel like I'm stumped and don't know the proper way to balance things or a good way to design a mechanic.
  • I really enjoy writing the story and the characters I create
  • I really enjoyed crafting the environments and relating it to the narrative
  • Resting is really really important, as a bulk of my ideas were generated after resting for a period of time (such as during sleep, dinner, and work)
  • This was my first time incorporating random-elements into the game
  • It's hard to play-test as the developer
  • I finished a day early after exhausting everything I can think of to polish the game

Closing Statements

I liked the game I made and the ideas I came up with. Not sure if I'll develop the game further, but I can certainly make use of the pieces (such as the characters and the mechanics). I look forward to my next project.
